Over the length of its long history, many places in Vietnam has been associated with dragons – the most holy animal among 4 worshipped ones . Dragon image was very familiar in cultural and spirituality life  of Vietnamese for thousands of years ago. So many places of the country has been associated with the noble animals ( dragon, unicorn, tortoise, and phoenix) in the form of Sino name or the Sino Vietnamese name ( Nom).

Here are the typical, widely known dragon landmark in Vietnam:

1. Thang Long capital

Thang Long is the name of the capital of Vietnam during Ly, Tran, Le, Mac, Le Trung Hung dynasties spanning from 1010 - 1788. Today it  is the capital of Hanoi.

According to historical analysis, in 8/1010, when King Ly Cong Uan moved the capital from Hoa Lu to Dai La .
Claiming to have seen a dragon ascending the Red River, he then named  new capital Thang Long  which means "rising dragon ". In 2010, the grand celebration of 1,000 years of Thang Long - Hanoi was solemnly held  in the capital.

2. Cuu Long River ( Mekong )

Cuu Long (nine dragons) is the common name for the network of distribitaries where Mekong River flows through the territory of Vietnam and empty into the sea through nine gates (today there is only 7 gates).This is also the name of the delta formed by the silt of the river .

Today, the Cuu Long River Delta is considered a breadbasket and major fishery area of the country. This is a land of unique culture, beautiful natural scenery and full of tourism potential.

3. Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay (group of islands of Ha Long City, Cam Pha Town and part of Van Don island district, Quang Ninh province) was best known as a natural wonder with unique islands, amazing caves and fascinating beaches.

The name Ha Long came  from the legend that in the foundation time of the country, when the Vietnamese  had to flight against invader, the Jade Emperor sent Dragon family down as the protector. When the enemy boat arrived, dragons spat out their dragon pearls, which then turn into thousands of islands dotting in the bay , linking together to form a great wall against the invaders. Under magics, numerous rock mountains abruptly appeared on the sea, ahead of invaders' ships; the forward ships struck the rocks and each other.

The enemy was defeated and the dragon family did not return to heaven but decided to stay on the earth, where the battle took place. The place where the mother dragon descended was named Ha Long Bay.

4. Bai Tu Long Bay

Also involved in the legend of Ha Long Bay, the place where the dragon's children attended upon their mother was called Bai Tu Long Bay and the place where the dragon's children wriggled their tails violently was called Bach Long Vy island.

As a important part of the heritage of Ha Long Bay, with the beautiful island with white long sandy beaches , Bai Tu Long Bay is now attracting more and more foreign tourists to come and relax at beautiful beachside resorts

5. Bach Long Vi island

Bach Long Vi - "Dragon tail island"  is belong to Hai Phong province. This is an island that has an important role in the expansion of ocean waters and the delimitation of the Tonkin Gulf.   In addition, the island is located on a major fishing grounds and has a significant place in the economical and security development strategy and security and sea defense of Vietnam in the Gulf of Tonkin.

6.  Long Bien Bridge

Proudly referred as “ Dragon bridge “ by Hanoi resident, Long Bien bridge is one of symbol of Hanoi capital. Designed by the famous French architecture of Eiffel tower - Gustave Eiffel , this is the first steel bridge in Hanoi which is across the Red River and connects two parts of the city of Hanoi, Vietnam

The bridge was built in 1899-1902, with 1862 meter long and It was one of the world's big bridges in that period. During the war against the U.S.,  bridge’s spans were heavily damaged. Some parts of the original structure remain intact, while large sections have been built later to repair the holes. Only half of the bridge retains its original shape. A project with support and loan from the French government is currently in progress to restore the bridge to its original appearance.

Today trains, bicycles, motorcycles and pedestrians use Long Bien bridge.

7.  Nha Rong Wharf

Nha Rong Wharf (located at the junction of Ben Nghe channel and Saigon river, District 4, HCM) is the place on 06.05.1911, the patriot Nguyen Tat Thanh had started his journey to save the country. Built by the French in 1863, it was originally a major trading port with very unique architecture,

Nha Rong wharf name is derived from two iconic Asian dragon head motif  "two dragons attending upon the moon" a familiar style for decorating temples in Vietnam. It is attached on the roof of the trade port ‘s headquarter building. Today this building is Ho Chi Minh museum

8.  Ham Rong Bridge

Spanning the Song Ma river , situated 4 km north of Thanh Hoa city, Ham Rong bridge is very famous bridge in the Vietnam War. The original bridge was built by the French in 1904, with the steel arch and no pier in the center, it was destroyed by war in 1946. From 1962-1964 Ham Rong bridge was rebuilt. In later years, this bridge is the key of the fight against enemy and protection of traffic. It was badly damaged the U.S bombs in 1972 and by 1973 it is restored.

Nowadays Ham Rong bridge is used for rail transportation and is regarded as a symbol for the strong will of the people Thanh Hoa.

9.  Ham Rong Mountain

Ham Rong is also the name of a famous mountain located in the majestic Hoang Lien Son range of Vietnam. Mountains is derived from the fact that it has a quite clear shape of a dragon head . Legend says that long ago when Sapa was part of the ocean two dragons who were brothers came here to play. When their father called them back home, only the older dragon made it back while the younger lost his way because the gate of heaven was closed. This dragon had to stay forever in the earth and his body turned into the mountain with his head towards the sky where his family was.

Located near the tourist town of Sa Pa (Lao Cai) , Ham Rong Mountain has become a popular destination for many travelers who prefer the beautiful natural scenery, cool climate, fresh air here.

10. Long Hai Beach

Comparing to a blue sea dragon, Long Hai beach (the Long Hai Town, Long Dien District, Vung Tau city) is widely known for its stretching, scenic beaches with blue clear water. Romantic scenery of the sea were added with grand cliff reaching out like challenging ocean waves .
